Malachi 3:1-6. ““Look! I’m sending my messenger on ahead to clear the way for me. Suddenly, out of the blue, the Leader you’ve been looking for will enter his Temple—yes, the Messenger of the Covenant, the one you’ve been waiting for. Look! He’s on his way!” A Message from the mouth of GOD -of-the-Angel-Armies. But who will be able to stand up to that coming? Who can survive his appearance? He’ll be like white-hot fire from the smelter’s furnace. He’ll be like the strongest lye soap at the laundry. He’ll take his place as a refiner of silver, as a cleanser of dirty clothes. He’ll scrub the Levite priests clean, refine them like gold and silver, until they’re fit for GOD, fit to present offerings of righteousness. Then, and only then, will Judah and Jerusalem be fit and pleasing to GOD, as they used to be in the years long ago.

“Yes, I’m on my way to visit you with Judgment. I’ll present compelling evidence against sorcerers, adulterers, liars, those who exploit workers, those who take advantage of widows and orphans, those who are inhospitable to the homeless—anyone and everyone who doesn’t honor me.” A Message from GOD -of-the-Angel-Armies. “I am GOD —yes, I AM. I haven’t changed. And because I haven’t changed, you, the descendants of Jacob, haven’t been destroyed.”

God’s Justice will be terrible. We will each be weighed and measured against our sins and good deeds. That thought alone scares me because the Bible doesn’t pull any punches on the consequences of our actions;

1. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)

2. Our good deeds are like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6)

3. Not just anyone can get into heaven (Matthew 25:46; Romans 6:23; Luke 12:5; Mark 9:43)

At the end of today’s passage God reminds us of who He is. The same God who smote Egypt with terrible plagues to rescue His people. The same God parted the Red Sea with a wave of His hand. The same God who leveled the walls of Jericho who a trumpet blast. The same God who caused streams to spring up in the desert so Hagar’s little boy would not die, who feed all the Israelites with manna and quail for 40 years as they wandered the desert

Mercy and compassion mixed with Justice and law. God has not changed. There must be punishment for our sins and yet the live God feels for us means His Son Jesus steps in on our behalf if we agree to step aside. I’m glad God doesn’t change.

Think About This

Are you standing in the way of God’s love and Mercy? If you are remember that put you right in the path of justice and law.

Dear Lord, I can’t begin to thank You enough for loving me the way You do. I’m glad You do not change. Amen

Zechariah 6:12-13. ““‘A Message from GOD -of-the-Angel-Armies. Be alert. We have a man here whose name is Branch. He will branch out from where he is and build the Temple of GOD. Yes, he’s the one. He’ll build the Temple of GOD. Then he’ll assume the role of royalty, take his place on the throne and rule—a priest sitting on the throne!—showing that king and priest can coexist in harmony.’”

The separation of church and state is very important to some but for the Christian there is no such thing. You can’t compartmentalize your life, it has to be wholly lived just as Christ’s was and was wholly given up. We are called to be a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9) in the order of Christ(John 15:5). It’s simple; you in or out?

Think About This

Are you a different person in different places? You need to be consistent in character. Use Christ as your example.

Dear Lord, May I be like You. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Micah 5:2-3. “But you, Bethlehem, David’s country, the runt of the litter— From you will come the leader who will shepherd-rule Israel. He’ll be no upstart, no pretender. His family tree is ancient and distinguished. Meanwhile, Israel will be in foster homes until the birth pangs are over and the child is born, And the scattered brothers come back home to the family of Israel.”

My children like to chant “the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first” as they compete in everything. People didn’t think much of Bethlehem, but God did and that’s what mattered.

In your own life; people may have over looked you, you might think little of yourself, you might down play your gifts and talents, but God sees the successes of all the amazing potential He put in you. It really is a matter of perspective. Would you be like everyone else and accept what they say about you, what you believe about you? Or are you going to stand out in history because you took God at His Word? Remember the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first.

Think About This

In what ways can you demonstrate your faith in God’s word today?

Dear Lord, Stop my ears up if that’s what it takes for me to hear You speak to me. Your report is the only one that counts. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Isaiah 11:1-10. “A green Shoot will sprout from Jesse’s stump, from his roots a budding Branch. The life-giving Spirit of GOD will hover over him, the Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding, The Spirit that gives direction and builds strength, the Spirit that instills knowledge and Fear-of- GOD. Fear-of- GOD will be all his joy and delight. He won’t judge by appearances, won’t decide on the basis of hearsay. He’ll judge the needy by what is right, render decisions on earth’s poor with justice. His words will bring everyone to awed attention. A mere breath from his lips will topple the wicked. Each morning he’ll pull on sturdy work clothes and boots, and build righteousness and faithfulness in the land.

The wolf will romp with the lamb, the leopard sleep with the kid. Calf and lion will eat from the same trough, and a little child will tend them. Cow and bear will graze the same pasture, their calves and cubs grow up together, and the lion eat straw like the ox. The nursing child will crawl over rattlesnake dens, the toddler stick his hand down the hole of a serpent. Neither animal nor human will hurt or kill on my holy mountain. The whole earth will be brimming with knowing God-Alive, a living knowledge of God ocean-deep, ocean-wide.

On that day, Jesse’s Root will be raised high, posted as a rallying banner for the peoples. The nations will all come to him. His headquarters will be glorious.”

The Phoenix is a legendary bird that is born out of its own ashes. It doesn’t die; but spontaneously combusts to regenerate. Cool and creepy at the same time. It’s also proof that man has always hoped that somehow no matter how bad the situation it can be salvaged.

Today’s passage talks about just that. We all suffer from the human condition and boy do we have it bad. In fact, it’s terminal. But hope is not lost! Out of the ashes rises the Sun with healing on His wings (Malachi 4:2). He is the shoot of Jesse come to salvage us from this mess, He is our salvation.

The world to come sounds lovely. Would you recognize Christ’s sigil when it’s lifted though?

Think About This

Do you belong to Christ? How do you identify?

Dear Lord, Thank You for coming to my rescue. May I never fall overboard, but forever hold on to the mast that is You. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Psalm 89:1-4. “Your love, GOD, is my song, and I’ll sing it! I’m forever telling everyone how faithful you are. I’ll never quit telling the story of your love— how you built the cosmos and guaranteed everything in it. Your love has always been our lives’ foundation, your fidelity has been the roof over our world. You once said, “I joined forces with my chosen leader, I pledged my word to my servant, David, saying, ‘Everyone descending from you is guaranteed life; I’ll make your rule as solid and lasting as rock.’””

When has God ever gone back on His Word? Every promise He made, He fulfilled. Even prophecies came to pass with the advent of Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection.

With this track record one would think we’d be chomping at the bit to represent God where we are. What is holding us back? Christ said He’d return soon. Are we ready for that?

Think About This

God’s track record is flawless. How do I become faithful?

Dear Lord, May I believe You, trust You, emulate You. I want to be faithful, I want to be ready. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Deuteronomy 18:15-19. “GOD, your God, is going to raise up a prophet for you. GOD will raise him up from among your kinsmen, a prophet like me. Listen obediently to him. This is what you asked GOD, your God, for at Horeb on the day you were all gathered at the mountain and said, “We can’t hear any more from GOD, our God; we can’t stand seeing any more fire. We’ll die!”

And GOD said to me, “They’re right; they’ve spoken the truth. I’ll raise up for them a prophet like you from their kinsmen. I’ll tell him what to say and he will pass on to them everything I command him. And anyone who won’t listen to my words spoken by him, I will personally hold responsible.”

Genesis 15:1-6. “After all these things, this word of GOD came to Abram in a vision: “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I’m your shield. Your reward will be grand!” Abram said, “ GOD, Master, what use are your gifts as long as I’m childless and Eliezer of Damascus is going to inherit everything?” Abram continued, “See, you’ve given me no children, and now a mere house servant is going to get it all.”

Then GOD ’s Message came: “Don’t worry, he won’t be your heir; a son from your body will be your heir.” Then he took him outside and said, “Look at the sky. Count the stars. Can you do it? Count your descendants! You’re going to have a big family, Abram!” And he believed! Believed GOD! God declared him “Set-Right-with-God.””

Why did Abram believe God? That seemed like an impossible promise; a man who was aging, his wife had proven barren is told, “Don’t sweat it, you’ll have a son and more than a million grand babies“. This man doesn’t bat an eyelash, instead he says, “Right on, God!”

First you need to understand that God called Abram out of his country, separated him from his extended family and took him away from his father’s tents, making him solely dependent on him. That could have gone sideways in a hot minute but it didn’t, instead Abram’s life blew up with blessings such that the whole world knew of him. After that if God said jump Abram would have been 10ft in the air before thinking to ask, “How high?”

Despite all that He has done for us already we chose not to believe God when He says we can live forever. Which is sad really because that’s all that matters. Unlike Abram’s situation though ours has an expiration date and unfortunately we don’t know it. Why not grab a hold of the offer now before it’s too late? Christmas is both a reminder of the production and expiration of God’s offer of eternal life to us.

Think About This

Have you accepted God’s offer? There’s still time if not

Dear Lord, May I be set right with God. In Jesus name I pray. Amen
