Psalm 16:8     Day and night I’ll stick with God; I’ve got a good thing going and I’m not letting go.

Mary simply couldn’t stop preening in the mirror!  Her hair had never looked this good before; it was think and luscious and bouncy and ever so shiny.  She ran the brush through it one more time and reflected on the progress her hair had made in the past six months.  Mary used to be what they called ‘Brenya’; meaning it was tough for her to grow out her hair, but after six months of religiously applying the new hair product correctly she could now pull her hair up in a bun!  Yeah, she had a good thing going and Mary didn’t intend to stop.

No one comes to Christ and remains the same.  That’s the whole point of Christianity; we had changed from what God made us to be because we sinned – Christ works on us and in us to make us what God intended again.  The NIV Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:

The old has gone, the new is here!

What you meet Christ the difference in you must be made clear.  Its not that you suddenly start wearing long dresses or stop swearing in public.  The change starts from within you and shines forth in everything you do.  This way the change is permanent and attractive to others

See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland.

Isaiah 43:19 NIV

When something works for you or makes a positive difference in your life would you change it?  With God I know I got a real good thing going on and I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Think About This

What difference has knowing God made in your life?  Who can see that?

Dear Lord,

When You came into my life all things were made new, bright and beautiful and for that I’m forever grateful.  Help me to live so that others might see You in me.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen

2 Timothy 1:7     God doesn’t want us to be shy with his gifts, but bold and loving and sensible.

Serwah had been rehearsing all week and she knew the words of the song backwards; that wasn’t her problem.  Achiaa had helped her with the dance steps and everyone at home had said the choreography was lovely; again not her problem.  Her problem was the scores of people seated in their Sunday best waiting for the talent show to begin.  What if they didn’t like her performance?  What if they booed her off the stage?  Serwah suddenly felt sick at the thought of it.  Mama came up from behind, hugged her and said, “I know it’s a little scary to do new things – sometimes even things you’ve been doing for years, but know this; God gave you a special gift called life and He wants you to go out and live it in a big, bold way so everyone will see how awesome He is.  Do you think you can do that honey?”  Serwah drew herself up, smiled shyly and walked on to the stage.

A lot of people don’t recognise that they have gifts, but we all do.  Even if you’re yet to identify the one that makes you unique, know that life itself is a gift.  God isn’t asking Christians to take a back seat in life – not at all.  He wants us to the centre of it all so we can influence those around us and bring them to Christ.

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

Be bold with your life; get out there and shine the love of Christ into people’s lives.  God wants us to take a sensible stand for Him, so assess the situation and prepare, but don’t shrink back.  That’s not the Christian point of view.

Think About This

Do you sometimes walk away from situations where you could shed Christian light because of fear?  How can you encourage yourself to be bold?

Dear Lord,

I know You’ve given me all I need to succeed already, but sometimes when I look at what I’m up against it gets a little scary.  I know you want me to be bold and loving and sensible, please help me remember that.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen

Joshua 1:9     “Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.”

Josh creased his brow.  This wasn’t going to be easy.  He was so young; what if the older people didn’t listen to him?  It was a long trip; so many things could go wrong along the way.  Suddenly the wind stilled and God spoke to Joshua’s heart;

“Get going.  I won’t give up on you; I won’t leave you.  Strength! Courage!  Give it everything you have, heart and soul.”

The leaves rustled again and Josh knew everything was going to be alright.  God was on His side and rooting for him.

You and I are not that different from Joshua.  We’ve all been given a job to do.  Maybe it’s something totally new, maybe it’s something the chap before made a complete mess of or maybe he was brilliant at it.  Whatever the situation, it’s natural to be hesitant, to have doubts and fears; after all we’re only human.  But we’re also Christian and that’s what makes the difference; God is on our side.  Whenever we’re shaken by circumstances He leans in and whispers; “Man up, Dude!  You can do this.  I’m rooting for you!”

Of course it’s up to us to decide to listen and follow through or continue to cower in the face of life.  Every time he got discouraged Joshua listened to God’s cheerleading and achieved awesome things.  If we’re not that different then it’ll work for you too.  It works for me.cheer.jpg

Do you listen to God’s cheer-leading?  Tell me how it makes a difference in your life.

Dear Lord,

There are so many challenges that I face every day, please help me to remember that in the midst of it all I have You on myside so I can be bold, brave and strong.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen

Isaiah 40:31     But those who wait upon God get fresh strength.  They spread their wings and soar like eagles, They run and don’t get tired, they walk and don’t lag behind.

“This is boring!” Edem thought.  They had been sitting still for hours and all he had seen were pigeons.  He felt a quick sharp pain in his mid-section as Setor nudged him, “look to the left!”  He could barely see it at first, but soon the speck in the sky formed a majestic eagle dipping and soaring through the heavens.  Edem was captivated by the eagle’s movements and realised a pattern.  The bird wasn’t flapping his wings as vigorously like other birds; instead it flew a bit then seemed to stop entirely whilst mid-air.  Then it would start to rise and soon it was soaring high above anything else in the sky.  Edem wondered what gave the bird the strength and energy to do such feats when others found perches to rest.  Setor explained that eagles would pause and then ride on air currents which gave them that needed lift and a second wind with a burst of energy.

You have two options in life.  Fight your way through everything and in the process wear yourself out. Or you could wait of God and breeze through all the things meant to frustrate you.  A lot of people think waiting is a waste of time, but it can actually be a period of preparation.  The point though is that having God in the mix makes all the difference.

Imagine you have exams.  You could choose to cram the night before or ask for wisdom and make a study plan ahead of the date.  One sees you walk confidently into the examination hall knowing you’re well prepared and rested, whilst the other has you rushing in with bags under your eyes and a desperate hope you covered everything.  Ride the current with God and see the difference it makes in your life.

The Bible talks quite a bit about the strengths of the eagle.  If you want to read up a bit more about that check out this link; http://church-of-yehovah.org/eagleway.htm

Dear Lord,

Please teach me to be patient and rely on you no matter what it is I’m doing and however long its taking.  Remind me that if I trust You, I’ll receive my second wind.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t panic. I’m with you.  There’s no need to fear for I’m your God.  I’ll give you strength.  I’ll help you.  I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.

“Alright Chris, relax.  Just do what I tell you and you’ll be fine ok?  Don’t worry I won’t let go of the bicycle until you’re ready to ride on your own”, Daddy assured him.  Chris nodded and steadied himself on the shiny new tricycle he had gotten for Christmas.  Daddy told him to push his feet against the pedals so they would move and turn the wheels round.  Chris tried, but the machine wobbled underneath him.  He got scared and clung to Daddy, “I’m right here Chris, don’t worry I’ve got you.”

God’s got you. No matter what it is you’re going through in life remember this one thing – God’s got you.  Things may be tough at home, but relax – God’s got you.  You might be falling behind in your studies, there is no need to panic – God’s got you.  You don’t understand why you feel the way you do most of the time, chill – God’s got you.  A friend is counting on you for advice?  God’s got you both.  Never forget that God’s got you.

How can you be sure God’s got you?  Where does it say so in the Bible?

Dear Lord,

All throughout the Bible you remind me that You’ve got me, but sometimes I still forget.  Please help me remember that with You I am in great care and yes, You’ve got me.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen

Romans 8: 28 That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

Melissa stared in awe as Mummy filled the blender with all sorts of interesting things.  She picked up the leftover banana from yesterday, but now it looked different.  Melissa asked Mummy and was told it was frozen and chopped up.  Melissa’s big brother Todd was lactose intolerant and drank only soy milk; Mummy pour some of that it too. Then something Melissa had never seen before that Mummy said was called wheat germ.  When Melissa asked why they were gonna eat germs, Mummy laughed and said it wasn’t that kind of germ.  Melissa shrugged and helped put in strawberry jam and a little peanut butter.  Mummy switched the machine on and after a while, poured some of the mixture out into Melissa’s cup.  It was good!  It was really good!  Even with the germs that went in; this smoothie was yum!

Bad things happen.  Good things happen.  Stuff happens to people all the time whether they are good or bad.  A lot of people think that when you’re a Christian only good things should happen to you.  That isn’t true.  Some bad things will still happen because some people will still make the wrong choice.  Sometimes it’s you making the wrong choice.

What makes being a Christian so special though is that God promises; “no matter what happens I can work it out so it becomes something good for you, because you and I are friends.”  You have to trust God on this and wait for Him to finish doing His thing.  Sometimes it takes a while like when Joseph was in prison.  You have to be patient and live a life that shows you trust God and believe He knows what He is doing; because He does.  When He is done; it usually something incredible!  You become an incredible story.  All it took was a little good, a little bad and a whole lot of trust in the Lord.  That’s a pretty good blend.

Think About This

Don’t see how your current situation can be any good?  Turn it over to God and trust Him; see what happens next.

Dear Lord,

I might not know the end game, but I do know You.  When things get bad please remind me of that so I don’t lose hope but rather trust You to turn things around for my good.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen

Psalm 46: 1 God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need him.

Tilly giggled softly to herself as Ebow went by her hiding place.  Oh this was fun!  Whenever Ebow and Adadzewa came to visit Piloloo was one of their favourite games to play and today was no different except Ebow was yet to find her.  Tilly had changed her hiding place.  As soon as she had heard that her cousins were coming to visit, Tilly tried out new places to hide so she couldn’t be found and she had discovered the perfect spot!  Ebow came by her secret place once more, scratched his head and left.  Tilly was safe from discovery a little while longer.

Running into God can be a bit like playing Piloloo or Hide and Seek; when you have a great hiding space nobody can find you and you’re safe.  What makes God an awesome hiding place is He is everywhere and anyone can run into Him; whether or not someone is already hidden in Him.  The King James Version puts it this way;

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Not only does God keep us safe but He makes us stronger as we hibernate in Him; so that when we come out, we can face the world.

Is God the first person you turn to when you’re in trouble?  Why not give Him a try.

Dear Lord,

When things come rushing at me or I get scared and need a safe place to hide please tuck me into Yourself and keep me safe.  Please give me the strength I need to face whatever lies ahead of me.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen
