1 Timothy 2:5. “That there’s one God and only one, and one Priest-Mediator between God and us—Jesus, who offered himself in exchange for everyone held captive by sin, to set them all free.”
Why didn’t Jesus stay here on earth teaching, healing and drawing all men unto Himself? Why did he have to go back to Heaven? I would have loved to have the chance to meet Him and not even chat, but to sit in His presence.
Christ had to ascend and I’m interested in why; what is He doing there? He had already done the important spiritual work of reconciling man to God, now the physical work needed to be done. Unlike in His Spiritual form, Christ as a man did not have the Omnipresence that would enable Him be everywhere at once. He resumed that form so He could see, hear and feel all, regardless of time and place. This is work He started whilst on earth and continues in Heaven even through us (Acts 1:1&2)
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”
Hebrews 4:14-15 NIV
Even after the reconciliation, reparations needed to be made and that’s what Christ is working on now. As High Priest and Mediator, Christ intercedes on our behalf. Not that God forgets His sacrifice, but that we really are a trying bunch. Christ lived the human life and knows its pitfalls intimately; He therefore stands in the gap to say, “One more chance” Because of His intercession we can ask for anything in God’s will and we will receive it.
“You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
John 14:14 NIV
God promised that His Spirit would settle on all men (Joel 2:28), Jesus affirmed that promise in Acts 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””
It was fulfilled at Pentecost. Jesus ascended to work on phase two of our Salvation. He works with and through us as we are joint heirs of God’s Kingdom.
